What Is an Invert?

Invert refers to the action of lifting your body upside down on the pole — essentially going from standing or climbing into an inverted (head-down) position. It’s a key milestone in every pole dancer’s journey and unlocks a whole world of tricks, transitions, and strength-building moves.

Why Inverts Matter

Inverting is often seen as a major breakthrough because it marks the transition from beginner to intermediate level. But more importantly:

  • It builds serious core and upper body strength
  • It gives you access to tricks like Shoulder Mount, Gemini, Scorpio, and more
  • It teaches body awareness, control, and fear management

Types of Inverts

There are different ways to enter an invert, depending on your level and the style you’re training in. Common types include:

  • Basic Invert: Entered from the floor or a climb, tucking the knees and lifting the hips
  • Straddle Invert: Opens into a V-shape with both legs out to the sides
  • Chopper: A controlled, strength-based straddle invert without momentum
  • Shoulder Mount: Invert initiated from the shoulders, often used as a dynamic transition

Is It Safe for Beginners?

Inverts require strength and body awareness — and attempting them too early can lead to frustration or injury. At POLEPLACE, we recommend:

  • Building foundational strength first (especially core, shoulders, and back)
  • Practicing controlled climbs, pole sits, and spins before inverting
  • Using a spotter or crash mat when trying your first inversions
  • Following a structured progression rather than rushing ahead

Tips for Your First Invert

  • Engage your core before lifting your legs
  • Don’t jump: Controlled movements are safer and build better technique
  • Use your arms: Pull with your lats and keep your shoulders active
  • Breathe: Holding your breath creates tension and limits control

What We Believe at POLEPLACE

You don’t have to rush. Inverting isn’t a competition — it’s a moment of trust between your body and the pole. When it happens, it feels like flying. Until then, every climb, every hold, and every shake in your arms is a step toward it. We’ll guide you there — safely and with love.
