What Is Grip Aid?

Grip aid refers to any product or method that helps improve your grip on the pole during training. Pole dancing requires strong contact between your body and the pole — and that connection can get tricky when you’re sweating, have dry hands, or are still building strength. Grip aids help you feel safer and more in control.

Why Use Grip Aid?

Especially for beginners, slipping can be frustrating or even scary. Grip aids can:

  • Reduce slipping due to sweat or dry skin
  • Boost your confidence when learning new moves
  • Support your grip while your strength develops
  • Make certain pole tricks and spins feel more accessible

Types of Grip Aids

Not all grip aids are the same — and your skin type plays a big role in what works best for you. Here are the most common types:

  • Liquid Chalk: Dries the skin, great for sweaty hands
  • Resin-Based Products: Provide extra tackiness, good for dry skin
  • Powders: Help manage moisture and reduce stickiness
  • Sprays: Quick-dry solutions, often for body grip
  • Grip Gloves or Sleeves: Physical aids for added friction (sometimes used for injury recovery)

When and How to Use It

There’s no single rule — some dancers use grip aids regularly, others only for performances or tough training days. If you’re just starting out, you might want to:

  • Apply a small amount before training specific moves like spins or sits
  • Include it in your warm-up if you’re prone to sweating
  • Alternate between using it and going without — to build natural grip strength

Things to Keep in Mind

  • Start slow: Test how your skin reacts before making it part of your routine
  • Clean the pole regularly: Product buildup can affect grip and safety
  • Don’t rely on it too much: Think of grip aid as support, not a crutch
